How roof measurement works
Roofers estimate in squares, where one square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. The tricky part is that your roof is bigger than the footprint of your house because of the slope. To get the true area you measure the footprint, then multiply by a pitch factor — 1.118 for a common 6:12 roof, more for steeper pitches. Divide the result by 100 for squares and add 10–15% for waste around valleys, hips, and cuts.

Estimating tips for an accurate order
- Always measure the true surface area, not the ground footprint — pitch adds 5–40%.
- Order shingles by the square; architectural shingles come three bundles per square.
- Add 10% waste for a simple gable roof, 15% for cut-up roofs with valleys.
- Don't forget underlayment, drip edge, ridge cap, and flashing in your budget.
